Summary[edit]

Description
English: Gravestone on the symbolic tomb of Saint José de Anchieta y Díaz de Clavijo (Joseph of Anchieta, 1534-1597), Palácio Anchieta, Vitória, Espírito Santo, Brazil. Anchieta was buried in front of the main altar of the church, next to another Jesuit priest, Gregório Serrão. Anchieta's bones were removed to the College of the Jesuits in Salvador, Bahia in Salvador in 1610, then to Rome. The Jesuits sent a relic of José de Anchieta, a piece of his femur, and a tombstone was commissioned from Portugal in the late 16th century. It is carved from lioz stone and has black granite inlay with Asian-inspired floral details.
