Description
Français : Léonard DEFRANCE (1735 - 1805), Intérieur d'une fenderie, huile sur panneau, 35,5 × 52,5 cm Notre Intérieur d’une fenderie, probablement située dans la région de Liège, cœur de la métallurgie wallonne, met en scène un couple de patriciens, peut-être Pierre de Paul de Maibe et son épouse Joséphine de Cesve. Celui-ci, riche maître des forges, possédait alors une dizaine d’ « usines à fer » et aurait été le commanditaire de la plupart des tableaux de manufactures et d’usines de Léonard Defrance. Les fenderies produisaient des vergettes ou brins de métal à partir de barres de fer réalisées dans une forge, sur la droite de notre tableau, et « fendues » à l’aide de cylindres. Ces vergettes de fer alimentaient les nombreuses clouteries de la région.
