English: Grasshoppers are typically ground-dwelling insects with powerful hind legs which allow them to escape from threats by leaping vigorously. Have typical insect body plan of head, thorax & abdomen. The head is held vertically at an angle to the body, with mouth at the bottom. Head bears a large pair of compound eyes which give all-round vision, three simple eyes which can detect light & dark, a pair of thread-like antennae, sensitive to touch & smell. The downward-directed mouth-parts are modified for chewing & there are two sensory palps in front of the jaws.

Facts 1. They are among the most ancient living group of chewing herbivorous insects, dating back to the early Triassic ear, around 250 million years ago. 2. They are plant-eaters, with a few species at times becoming serious pests of cereals, vegetables & pasture, especially when they are in millions, destroy crops over wide areas, causing famine. 3.
