Notes |
This print is bound in Torquato Tasso, 'La Gierusalemme Liberata' (Genoa, Girolamo Bartoli: 1590). The volume is in leather with gold decorative border, lettered on the spine with 'Tasso Fig. da Castel. Gen. 1590', first illustrated edition of the complete book with Tasso's poem, two comments by Scipio Gentili and Giulio Guastavini, and 20 engravings plus frontispiece by Agostino Carracci and Giacomo Franco after Bernardo Castello (1871,0812.298-318). Handwritten note inside the cover. The epic poem the 'Gerusalemme Liberata' by Torquato Tasso narrates the story of the first Crusade, led by Godfrey of Boulogne, who captured Jerusalem in 1099. The poem was published in 1581 and it was republished with illustration in 1590 in Genoa by Girolamo Bartoli. There are twenty-one engravings, including the frontispice. Eleven engravings were signed by Giacomo Franco and two were signed by A.C.F., which Bellori and Malvasia interpreted as Agostino Carracci's signature, and based on this Malvasia ascribed seven additional engravings to Agostino. The engravings reproduce drawings by Bernardo Castello, now in Palermo (Gabinetto di Disegni e Stampe della Galleria Regionale di Palazzo Abatellis); see: The Illustrated Bartsch, Italian Master of the sixteenth century, Agostino Carracci, New York 1995, 39, pp. 244-245. This print is in reverse of the original drawing by B. Castello which is in the Galleria di Palazzo Abatellis in Palermo (inv. no. 106/116), see: The Illustrated Bartsch, Italian Master of the sixteenth century, Agostino Carracci, New York 1995, 39, no. 163; D. De Grazia, Le stampe dei Carracci con i disegni, le incisioni, le copie e i dipinti connessi, Bologna 1984, no. 155. |

[edit]This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
