Le débarcadère du Laténium à Hauterive sur le lac de Neuchâtel Au fond, à gauche sur la rive opposée du lac, le site archéologique de la Tène, situé dans le lit de la rivière reliant le lac de Neuchâtel à celui de Bienne. Le site a été découvert en 1857 puis fouillé de 1907 à 1918. Il a permis de trouver 2500 objets très bien conservés, en fer, bronze, bois, céramique. Une partie des objets date du 3è siècle av. J.-C., une autre remonte à l'époque romaine. Ce gisement extraordinaire de la Tène a donné son nom à la civilisation celtique du second âge du fer, de 450 environ à la fin du 1er siècle av. J.-C. Dans l'Antiquité, la Tène fut un important centre régional le long de l'axe Rhône-Rhin, où des produits manufacturés étaient transportés par voie d'eau ou par route. Au fond, à droite, sur le mont-Vully, se trouvait un oppidum celte, appelé l'Alésia helvète qui domine le site de la Tène. Des fouilles archéologiques ont mis au jour un habitat fortifié de 50 hectares. Le site a du être un marché régional et un centre d'artisanat entre 120 et 60 av. J.-C. Il faisait partie du territoire des Helvètes, décrit par Jules César. Des traces d'un violent incendie y ont été découvertes, elles sont probablement à mettre en relation avec l'émigration des Helvètes en 58 avant notre ère vers l'ouest de la Gaule transalpine.
