La façade ouest de la "Glasgow School of Art". Les trois fenêtres en hauteur sont celles de la bibliothèque (1907-1909) conçue par Mackintosh (y compris le mobilier), qui occupe trois étages. Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) est un architecte, peintre et designer, né à Glasgow, qui est considéré comme un des principaux précurseurs du mouvement moderne. Avec Margaret Macdonald, qui est devenue son épouse en 1900, son ami Herbert McNair et son épouse Frances Macdonald, la soeur de Margaret, tous issus de la "Glasgow School of Art", il a constitué un groupe d'artistes très novateurs pour l'époque appelé "The Four", influencé par l'Art Nouveau, le Symbolisme et par le mouvement anglais "Arts and Crafts". En 1896, Mackintosh, alors âgé de 28 ans, a gagné le concours d'architecture du nouveau bâtiment de la "Glasgow School of Art". Ce bâtiment entièrement conçu par lui et ses collaborateurs a fondé le "Glasgow style" (art nouveau écossais), il a été construit en deux étapes.
