Notes Il dipinto è probabilmente una redazione più tarda e in misure ridotte del quadro dal medesimo soggetto, ordinato a Camuccini da Lord Bristol alla fine del Settecento, e compiuto nel 1804, poi acquisitato (1816) da Ferdinando II di Borbone per il Palazzo Reale di Napoli. La pittura accuratissima, infatti, oltre che l'assoluta eguaglianza con il dipinto, suggerisce di non considerare l'opera come preparatoria; del resto anche della Morte di Cesare, il pendant del quadro napoletano, si conosce una redazione tarda di misure assai simili a quelle del dipinto lucchese, seppure su tela. Studi e bozzetti della Morte di Virginia sono conservati a Roma in collezione privata, e a Napoli (Capodimonte; Società di Storia Patria).
