Notes |
(Text from 'From Manet to Toulouse-Lautrec', BM 1978, cat.116) Commissioned by 'La Plume' (Léon Deschamps), and in its third state used as a poster for an international exhibition of posters at the Salon des Cent. This is an early state before the poster edition, published in an edition of 100. The third state had the lettering added: 'Salon des Cent, 31 Rue Bonaparte, Exposition Internationale d'Affiches'. The Salon des Cent was the same gallery as the Salon de la Plume, where the 'Elles' series was shown. The model was an unknown woman who had drawn Lautrec's attention on a journey he made by steamship between Le Havre and Bordeaux. The story is that he was so attracted by her that he refused to disembark at Bordeaux but continued to Lisbon where his companion Maurice Guibert finally got him to land. The lady, whom Lautrec never formally met, occupied cabin number 54, whence the print's title. Dortu places this escapade in 1896, which conflicts with Adriani's dating of the poster to 1895. |

[edit]This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
