Summary[edit]

Description
English: A surgical electromagnet being used to remove a foreign body embedded in a patient's eyeball in 1922. The Lancaster surgical electromagnet (A) is suspended by the bracket on the wall. It's pointed pole piece is held near the surface of the eye and the power is turned on. The magnetic field pulls the ferrous splinter of metal out of the eyeball without necessity of invasive probing with tweezers. A second electromagnet (B) is seen on the table. Alterations to image: Partially removed aliasing artifacts (crosshatched lines) introduced into halftone image during scanning using Gimp FFT filter.
