Summary[edit]

Description
English: object type / vase shape: attic red figure plate

- description obverse: ithyphallic satyr wearing a panther skin over the back running to the right, carrying pointed amphora; illegible kalos(?)-inscription - production place: Athens - painter: undetermined - in the Villa Giulia, in a special showcase in the rear of the room mainly occupied by the Castellani collection, there are exhibited 5 plates together with an attic red figure psykter (Smikros), an attic red figure kalpis (Berlin Painter) and a Caeretan hydria (Eagle Painter) restored to the Villa Giulia by American Museums. Therefore the 5 plates may also come from other museums or may be confiscated, but no information is given. The similarity of the shape and the decoration system suggest a provenance from the same find context and the production in the same pottery workshop. The more or less consistent style of anatomical drawing may betray the hand of one painter. The closest comparison is possible between the 2 plates showing a young athlete after the hoplitodromos. Only 2 of the plates have an inventory number written on the rim of the reverse. - period / date: late archaic, ca. 490-480 BC - material: pottery (clay) - findspot / provenance: ? - museum / inventory number: Roma, Museo nazionale etrusco di Villa Giulia

- Please note: Some museums permit photography of their exhibits for private, educational, scientific, non-commercial purposes only. If you intend to use the photo for commercial aims, I would recommend you to contact the museum.
