Description

Le That Luang ("Grand reliquaire") fut édifié en 1566 par le roi Setthathirath lorsqu'il installa la capitale du royaume à Vientiane. Ce "That ", qui trouve son origine dans le "Stupa" Indien recouvre un édifice antérieur, contenant une relique du Bouddha. Il symbolise également la montagne cosmique marquant le centre du monde .

Au milieu s'élève le "That" proprement dit à quatre arêtes surmonté d'une flèche atteignant 45 m de hauteur, dont la partie centrale en forme de bulbe, repose sur un socle à trois étages décoré à sa base de grands pétales de lotus. La base du That est entourée de trente reliquaires reposant sur de lourdes masses courbes à section carrée, de hauteurs grandissantes en s'écartant des axes. L'ensemble, d'environ 54 m de côté, est enclos dans une première galerie carrée interrompue au milieu de chaque face par une porte axiale, puis dans une enceinte reposant sur un immense gradin en doucine comportant quatre chapelles axiales.

Un cloître de 85 m de côté entoure l'ensemble, marqué au milieu de chaque face par un pavillon d'entrée .
