Summary
[edit]DescriptionLeeds Town Hall (20).JPG |
Town Hall, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. Designed by Cuthbert Brodrick, built 1853-1858. The tympanum of the front door was sculpted by Thomas of London. The exterior of the building has a number of architectural carvings by Robert and Catherine Mawer, although Catherine was credited with the work by 1858. The heads were described as masks in the 1850s, but some of them represent various ancient Greek mythological characters, and are also portraits of contemporary people. This is a portrait of Robert Mawer, by Catherine Mawer. Normally the Mawer Group used to crown the architect, but Cuthbert Brodrick was sculpted as the Smyrna Zeus, which does not have a crown. Robert Mawer's work on this building is some of his best, and he died before he could finish, so the crown is a sign of appreciation. |
