Summary[edit]

Description
English: Leland Arch in Wisconsin, USA.

Leland Arch is the highlight scenery at Wisconsin's Natural Bridge State Park. Despite the political name, this is not a natural bridge. Natural bridges have rivers or streams running underneath, whereas natural arches do not. Natural bridges are rarer than natural arches.

Leland Arch formed by differential weathering and erosion of quartzose sandstones of the Mazomanie Member of the Tunnel City Formation, an Upper Cambrian shallow marine unit. The park's stratigraphy includes four Cambrian units and one Ordovician unit.

According to Clayton & Attig (1990), Leland Arch formed by erosive undercutting along a ridge that intersected a steep hillside on the other side of the ridge.

Below Leland Arch is an archaeologically excavated rock shelter - Raddatz Rockshelter. Paleoindian artifacts indicate use and habitation back to the early Holocene (10 to 11 ka).

Stratigraphy: Mazomanie Member, Tunnel City Formation, Upper Cambrian

Locality: Leland Arch, forested ridgetop natural arch in Natural Bridge State Park, northeast of Leland, south-central Sauk County, southern Wisconsin, USA
