Summary[edit]

Description

The dungeon of the fortress was built under Thibault V in the years 1160-1170. It was part of a castle destroyed in 1675.

Thibaut V, Count of Blois, known as "The Good", 25 or 26 May 1171, sent to the stake more than 30 people, men, women and children of the Jewish community in the city.

In his Roman History, La Louve de Blois, René Bruneau described the situation. "In 1170, the Comte de Blois, Thibaut V, fell in love with Polcelina, a Jew of his Jewishness, a young widow and mother of two daughters The case shocked the Jewish community of the city and triggered fierce jealousy of the Countess Alix (second wife of Thibaut). Nevertheless, Thibaut V does not give up his affair, attracting the increasing hostility of his wife, his vassals , its serfs. Countess to act fanatical monk, fiercely anti-Semitic, that will shake an opinion in advance hostile to Jewry (the Jew is the deicide and the usurer), until he condemns Thibaut death to all rabbis and their wives and their daughters (or thirty-three, twenty women). Polcelina and daughters are among them. "

Thursday, May 25, 1171, in Blois thirty-three Jews (one third of the Jewish community of the city) were burned alive in the blood libel, without any body, without proof and without any investigation! The case of Blois was the first blood libel in France and in Europe for the first time in collective death linked to a rumor.

Thibaut will be killed in 1191 during the siege of Acrid (3rd crusade).

The castle received Philip the Fair in 1301, Louis XI in 1468 and Louis XII in 1505.
