Français : Le Fort Portugais
Bâti en 1721, le Fort Portugais de Ouidah portait le nom de Saint-Jean-Baptiste d’Ajuda. Ce fort ressemble plus aujourd’hui à une maison coloniale aux murs blancs avec toutefois la présence d’un petit azulejo qui rappelle la Portugal. Dans la cour on peut admirer de magnifiques manguiers et un frangipanier qui doivent avoir de nombreuses histoires à raconter. On apprends qu’il y avait cinq (5) forts à Ouidah : les forts portugais, anglais, français, danois et hollandais. Ils ont tous été brûlés en 1961 après l’Indépendance du Bénin, à l’époque de Salazar. Le fort portugais est resté débout mais les archives ont toutes été détruites. En 1967, la transformation du fort en musée a été opérée par les portugais eux même. Ils ont ainsi rapportés des objets et documents. Aujourd’hui, le fort couvre la surface d’un hectare environ et entre ses murs se trouvent une résidence des représentants officiels du Portugal, une chapelle, une garnison et des casernes. Le musée accueille d’importantes collections accumulées à la suite de plusieurs fouilles archéologiques dans les zones de Savi et de Ouidah.
