Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Fragment of a Lezoux bowl, Drag. 29, from the Plicque Collection. Musée d'Archéologie Nationale, Saint-Germain-en-Laye. In James Curle, 1917, p. 150, fig. 17.1. Curle says this about it:
« in fig. 17 a number of early fragments from photographs of pieces in the Plicque Collection, for which I am indebted to Mr Donald Atkinson. These belong to the first period of Lezoux, which Dechelette places between about A.D. 40 and A.D. 75. All of these are portions of bowls of type 29, and they illustrate the admirable designs and the finish attained by the early Lezoux potters, whose names, such as Atepomarus, Cobnertus, Danomarus, indicate their Gaulish origin. In such pieces the red glaze of La Graufesenque is replaced by a bright orange colour, with a less lustrous surface. In the simplicity of their treatment they correspond in some measure with the South Gaulish products of the early first century, of which we have an example in the bowl by Scottius (fig. 11), but the designs have characteristics of their own which indicate an inspiration drawn from Arezzo or some other Italian source. » (Curle 1917, p. 149)
