Description

The fireplace mantle is mainly characterized by these two caryatids which support a console, above which is a mirror framed by two sea monsters. Above this mirror is a cartridge from which the bust of Jacques Cartier emerges. The mirror is then crowned with a broken pediment surmounted by an urn on base. On either side of the fireplace are the bookcases. These are primarily made up of shelves closed by doors on which sculpted reliefs symbolize, from left to right, Commerce, Fine Arts, Literature and History, and the State. Above, there are secondly the glass shelves which are each crowned with a circular pediment surmounted by a terrestrial globe.
