| Description |
Limestone in the Mississippian of Kentucky, USA. This is an outcrop of Upper Mississippian Slade Formation in Kentucky. The unit was formerly known as the Newman Limestone ("They always change the names to protect the innocent!"). Slade Formation limestones are shallow ocean deposits. At this site, the Slade Formation has been divided into the following members: Maddox Branch Member (top) Ramey Creek Member Tygarts Creek Member Armstrong Hill Member Cave Branch Member Mill Knob Member Warix Run Member (base) Pennsylvanian-aged Breathitt Formation disconformably overlies the Slade here. The unit shown here is the Tygarts Creek Member. It consists of cliff-forming, thick-bedded limestones over interbedded, thinner-bedded limestones and dolostones.
