Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Lindley L. Barrett House, 1050 Elmwood Avenue, Buffalo, New York, May 2022. Erected in 1895, here we have a most unusual iteration of the then-popular Dutch Colonial Revival style in which the marquee feature is the quintet of dormers piercing the enormous projecting side-gabled gambrel roof on the Elmwood Avenue façade. The three at top sport triangular and swan's-neck pediments, respectively, with raking dentil rows and simple pilaster strips framing the windows, while the larger and more ornate ones below are styled as hexagonal bays, with hipped roofs and leaded glass windowpanes. Below, a full-width front porch is centered on a semi-octagonal extension supported by elegant ornamental ironwork. Lindley Lawrence Barrett (1850-1929) was the English-born cofounder of the Whittett Barrett Company, a plumbing supply wholesaler with offices on lower Main Street. Barrett retired to Youngstown, New York in 1922, though his son Charles continued living in the house for a couple years thereafter.
