Description
English: Venice: Giovanni Antonio Nicolini da Sabbio and Brothers, for Niccolò and Domenico dal Gesù, October 1521.
8vo (147 x 100mm.), woodcut profile portrait of Dante on title-page, woodcut device of dal Gesù on verso of title-page, with final blank leaf, contemporary limp vellum lettered on spine, small repair to foot of title-page slightly affecting woodcut, title-leaf slightly soiled, small stain in last few leaves, lacking both pairs of ties.
Second edition of Dante's Convivio, first printed in Florence in 1490. In the preface, Dante justifies his use of the vernacular for writing this text (for Bembo's praise of the vernacular, see lot 139).
