Description

Loch Long which was used as part of the Royal Navy torpedo testing station. Loch Long is used by the Royal Navy to service nuclear submarines and surface vessels, and there is also a oil terminal operated by INEOS, thanks to the deep water. The water depth increases to 30 metres plus just a few metres from the shore, making the site suitable for the largest ships, supertankers and aircraft carriers included. Loch Long is situated in the middle, between Gareloch to the east, home of the UK nuclear deterrent, Trident (previously Polaris), and the Holy Loch to the west, which was home to the US Navy's european based nuclear deterrent, also the Polaris system.

The cranes seen on the right hand side are part of the Glenmallen/Glen Douglas Ministry of Defence Munitions depot, upto 40,000 tons of explosive munitions are stored in special bunkers built into the hillside off to the right behind the cranes.
