About 250 undisturbed burials of cremation remains have been recovered at the grave field of Harsefeld. Yet this is only a fraction of the interments formerly here, whose total number is estimated at several thousand. According to physical anthropological findings, this was a cemetery for men. This is confirmed by the grave goods, such as weapons and tools. Segregating graveyards by sex is regarded as typical of the Lombards.

Grave 26
Burial of a warrior. An iron Roman cauldron that served as an urn contained cremated remains as well as rich grave goods.

Auf dem Gräberfeld von Harsefeld wurden etwa 250 ungestörte Brandgräber geborgen. Dabei handelt es sich jedoch nur um einen Bruchteil der ehemals vorhandenen Bestattungen, deren Gesamtzahl auf mehrere Tausend geschätzt wird. Den anthropologischen Bestimmungen der Leichenbrände zufolge handelt es sich um einen Männerfriedhof. Dies bestätigen auch die Grabbeigaben, wie Waffen und Werkzeuge. Die Trennung in geschlechtsspezifische Friedhöfe gilt als charakteristisch für die Langobarden.

Bestattung eines Kriegers. In einem römischen Kessel aus Eisen, der als Urne diente, waren der Leichenbrand und reiche Beigaben enthalten.
