Description
English: Lombard gold bracteate
  • Poysdorf, District of Misteldorf, Lower Austria
Depicted here is a horned, stag-like animal with pronounced mane and tail, looking backward with its tongue hanging out. Four-legged animals in circular ornaments are typical of Germanic animal style I starting toward the end of the 5th century

. This bracteate with a gold-plated eyelet was found in Grave 4 at Poysdorf. This full-corpse grave was a disturbed burial of a woman stretched out on her back on a body board. Almost the entire set of jewellery of the deceased was recovered in its original position on her garments: this gold bracteate, a whorled fibula, glass beads of a necklace, a bronze hair pin next to her forehead, a belt buckle in the hip area, and between her knees a metal bead from her belt hanging. In addition there was a bowl with food, a knife, and a bone comb. The whorled fibula, long hair pin, and belt hanging are typical components of Germanic women's dressing. The deceased evidently belonged to one of the numerous Elbe Germanic groups who had settled in Austria and were designated as Lombards in the written sources beginning in the late 5th century

Deutsch: Langobardischer Goldbrakteat
