A train of London Underground A stock, built in the early 1960s, stands at Surrey Quays station on the London Underground's East London Line, with a morning commuter service bound for Shoreditch. London Underground services on the East London Line ceased in 2007 and the line was extended and converted to London Overground operation. The A stock trains continued to be used on the London Underground's Metropolitan line until they were replaced by air-conditioned, walk-through S8 stock trains between 2010 and 2012. At the time of their final withdrawal in 2012 the trains, which served for 51 years from 1961 until 2012, were the oldest trains on the London Underground and on any metro system in Europe. They were also the only trains on the network with transverse seating only, the only ones with luggage racks and umbrella hooks, the only ones with separate motoring and braking controls, and the last with no automated announcements. With a maximum speed of 70 mph, these trains were the world's fastest 4th rail trains. They were also the widest trains to be used on the London Underground.
