Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Loomis-Bixby House, 118 Richmond Avenue, Buffalo, New York, November 2021. An early example of the work of the local architectural firm of Swan & Falkner, this attractive two-and-a-half-story wood-frame edifice has been significantly marred by tasteless alterations (to such a degree that it was declared a "non-contributing building" upon the Elmwood West Historic District's nomination to the NRHP in 2012), yet still exemplifies fairly well the firm's favored Queen Anne aesthetic with its asymmetrical façade and the Classical influences (namely Doric pilasters) that frame the front entrance. The house was built around 1885 for Hobart Brown Lewis (1843-1893), who was a manufacturer and merchant of furniture by profession but was better known for his prominence in the local fraternal community, having served at various times as master of the Ancient Landmarks Lodge No. 441, F. & A.M. and as New York State grandmaster of the Ancient Order of United Workmen. Loomis moved five years later to the nearby town of Hamburg and sold the house to Ambrose S. Bixby (1855-1943), who remained until 1910. During the time he spent living at 118 Richmond, Bixby made his living as a real estate investor, but soon after moving out, he took a position in the city government as bookkeeper in the Comptroller's office and eventually worked his way up to the post of Deputy Assessor.
