Summary[edit]

Description Lot 8016-2: Secretary Knox Laid To Rest In Arlington. The honorary pallbearers, (left), and other Army, Navy, and Marine officers stand at salute as the flag is lifted from the coffin of Secretary Knox just before the committal services at Arlington National Cemetery, where the Secretary was buried with full military honors May 1, 1944. Kneeling at the right are Mrs. Frank Knox and Captain Lyman S. Perry, USN, aide to Secretary Knox. The Secretary’s personal flag is being carried by Warrant Officer William A. Pierce, USMC, who was flown East for the funeral from California, where is now on duty. He served as orderly to Secretary Knox from February 7, 1940 to November 4, 1942. Secretary Knox died on April 28, 1944.U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the Library of Congress. (2016/04/29).
