Description
Français : Louis Hennepin 1626 - v. 1705 Né et éduqué en Belgique, Hennepin est ordonné moine récollet (franciscain) en France. Ayant un coeur aventurier, il entreprend d'accomplir ses devoirs sacerdotaux dans plusieurs pays européens, avant d'être envoyé en Nouvelle-France comme missionnaire, en 1675. En 1679-1680, il accompagna Cavelier de La Salle dans son exploration du fleuve Mississippi. De retour en France, Louis Hennepin publie un compte rendu vivant de ses voyages, intitulé Description de la Louisiane (1683), qui remporte un grand succès populaire en Europe. Louis Hennepin fourni un remarquable écrit sur l'Amérique du Nord du XVIIe siècle et son livre contient la première description connue <<des merveilles de cette prodigieuse cascade>>, les chutes Niagara.
