To prevent enemy landings on these beaches, the French dug entrenchments around the two coves in the area and mounted cannons. Once the British had landed at Kennington Cove, southwest of the fortress, and began their advance overland around the harbour, the French abandoned these positions. The British then dismantled most of these defences in order to land cannons at Gun Landing Cove in preparation for their attack on the Battery Island and French warships in the harbour. This was the location (Gun Landing Cove) where Wolfe's forces unloaded cannons and munitions to setup the artillery batteries once the point was captured. |
