PLEASE, NO invitations or self promotions, THEY WILL BE DELETED. My photos are FREE to use, just give me credit and it would be nice if you let me know, thanks. Behind this door in the outer walls of the fortress is a countermine tunnel. It was constructed in the late 1720s as part of the King's bastion defenses. Explosives would have been placed there in time of war to blow up beneath an attacking force. It was not used in the sieges of Louisbourg as the attacking armies did not come in that direction. This countermine gallery was cruciform, with a main gallery approximately 120 ft. long to the crossing, and three arms each about 40 ft. long with a mine chamber at the end. |
