Description

The building for the Louisbourg’s Admiralty Court was in this area. It was the judicial body that was responsible for marine matters for the colony of Ile Royal. Established in 1717, it regulated fishing and trade, shipping, and settled disputes between captains and their crews. Held in the home of Judge Louis Levasseur, the fees paid to him for inspections, permits and certifications were his to keep.

The position of Judge of Admiralty Court was a lucrative one, bring in an annual income of 4,000 lives or more in fees.
