Description

This area is one of several burial grounds. Due to a lack of space in the parish cemetery, the French and English used this area from the 1740s until the Fortress’ destruction. With separate cemeteries for soldiers and civilians, these burial grounds occupied five acres. A 1759 description of the site notes that the French graves were so shallow that bones and edges of coffins could be seen above ground.

As coffins and caskets were an expensive luxury, many of the people buried at Louisbourg were only wrapped in shrouds.
