| Description |
English: Entomology working group, Biology Center, České Budějovice, Czech Republic. Lauren Des Marteaux was assessing freezing damage to malt fly tissues with and without special cryoprotectant additives. These special cryoprotectants are naturally produced by the flies in preparation for winter - and explain (at least partially) why the larvae can survive even at -196°C; an astonishing biological feat! On the background is Petr Hůla, also a member of this working group, who spontaneously showed his girlfriend, Gabriela Veselá, that besides loving science there is much love for close ones, too. |
