Summary
[edit]DescriptionLuzon matulis wood scabbard c.JPG |
English: The blade is a late-19th century fine Filipino sword, used by the Katipunan, during the 1896-1898 Philippine Revolution.
The photo of the entire sword can be seen here. The peened tang on the butt end of the hilt points to a Luzon origin. A close-up view showing the tang's protrusion on the hilt can be seen here. The leather scabbard on the other hand points to a Visayan 'service' of the sword (Visayan and Mindanao scabbards are almost always made out of wood). The leather 'throat' of the scabbard with its characteristic features (e.g., semi-circular flap) reinforces the plausibility of the Visayan exposure of the sword. The sword itself is commonly called Luzon matulis. Author and scholar Ambeth Ocampo has shown a photo of a very similar blade in his books, which bolo was the type allegedly used by the Katipunan founder, Andres Bonifacio. The sword came from American collectors, but it is now back in the Philippines. Overall length: 565 mm (22.2 inches); Blade length: 498 mm (19.6 inches); Maximum blade thickness: 8.5 mm (5/16 inch) Note: For further research is the symbolism indicated on the leather flap of the scabbard. Perhaps they are talismanic symbols.
