Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A late-19th or early-20th century ghost sign advertising "M. BROWN CLOTHIERS" adorns the south side wall of the three-story brick building at 2109 Main Street in Niagara Falls, New York, as seen from the corner of Niagara Avenue on an August 2022 afternoon. Marcus Brown was a merchant, low-level politico, and noted philanthropist (his largesse was what largely saved Niagara University from financial failure in its early history) who operated his namesake clothing store in this building from its completion in 1890 until his move to New York City in 1904, where he later became a great success as a real estate investor. Meanwhile, his son-in-law John J. Johnson kept the store going until 1931.
