M113 clears the minefield between the Horseshoe and the coast

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Dat Do, South Vietnam. 1969-07. An armoured personnel carrier (APC) fitted with an experimental mine clearing device moves down a minefield in southern Phuoc Tuy Province. The device, developed by the Officer Commanding the 1st Field Squadron Workshops at Nui Dat, Captain John Power of Balga, WA, is being tested on the old Australian minefield which runs from the Horseshoe feature towards the coast six miles away. It consists of a four inch axle mounted behind an APC onto which are placed large tyres with steel plating bolted to their thread. The device extends to the right of the vehicle and can move vertically which allows it to find mines planted in small holes. When one of the tyres strikes a mine it explodes the primary charge which throws the mine about three feet into the air where it explodes harmlessly behind the track.
