Summary[edit]

Description
English: The celestial globe is an invention of antiquity which, when made to measure, reproduces an intact, mirror-inverted image of the star's position in the night sky. However, the viewer has to "put himself in the place of the globe" in order to see the night sky properly. In an economic heyday in the Netherlands, which was based not least on the wealth of overseas colonies, the Amsterdam cartographer and engraver Gerard Valck and his son Leonard specialized in the manufacture of globes. For seafarers they were an important guide.
