Summary
[edit]DescriptionMEMORIAL TO JAMES MARTINEAU (6946277459).jpg | Born in Norwich in 1805 to the high-achieving Martineau family (his sister Harriet Martineau was a famed social reformer, They seem to have developed a shared fondness for settlement in beautiful landscapes, Harriet is now much associated with her time in Lakeland and the Ambleside area - if I remember correctly). For 45 years James Martineau was the Professor of Moral Philosophy at Manchester New College, the home of Unitarian education. Here in Rothiemuchus not far from Aviemore its quite something to come across this lovely memorial pillar to a man whose local connection is that he retired here. He is the author of - Rationale of Religious Enquiry. |
