Jednak pomimo wielu starań do lat 50. Dopiero w 1957 r., po pierwszym zebraniu Pienińskiego Oddziału Towarzystwa Miłośników Kultury i Sztuki Góralskiej, grupa zainteresowanych tych pomysłem górali szczawnickich zaczęła gromadzić eksponaty do przyszłego muzeum. Dwa lata później dyrekcja Uzdrowiska Szczawnica przekazała na zbiory trzy sale w XIX-wiecznym Dworcu Gościnnym. Uroczystego otwarcia Muzeum dokonano w maju 1959 r. Trzy lata później modrzewiowy budynek Dworca spłonął, a uratowane zbiory umieszczono w willi „Pałac”. W lipcu 1972 r. nastąpiło ponowne otwarcie Muzeum Pienińskiego. Dziesięć lat później Muzeum nadano imię Józefa Szalaya i włączono je do Muzeum Okręgowego w Nowym Sączu. --- Józef Szalay Museum of the Pieniny Mountains in Szczawnica Celebrated for its spa qualities, located in the foothills of Pieniny, Szczawnica partly owes its fame to the Hungarian Szalay clan. When in 1828 they acquired the town, Józef Szalay falling upon local mineral springs organised a ‘Swissstyle’ spa resort. In his will, he bequeathed Szczawnica to the Academy of Sciences, which sold it in 1909 to count Stadnicki of Nawojowa. Szczawnica became a fashionable resort between the wars as well as after the second world war, and was frequented by Professor Juliusz Kleiner and the actresses Ada Sari and Sława Przybylska, among numerous others. Like many other artists who visited Szczawnica, the painter and ethnographer Konstanty Kietlicz-Rayski, who arrived here in 1919, thought it essential to preserve the culture of Pieniny highlanders, which seemed threatened with extinction. He was the first to attempt to organise a museum for the purpose, later aided by the writer Jan Wiktor. In spite of their efforts, the museum was not opened until 1950s. It was only in 1957, after the first meeting of the Pieniny Section of the Highlander Art and Culture Society, that a group of locals started collecting objects for the future museum. Two years later, the management of Szczawnica Spa designated three rooms in the 19th-century Hospitality Inn for the exhibition. The opening of the museum was celebrated in May 1959. Three years later, the larch-wood building of the inn burnt down, and the salvaged collection was placed in the ‘Palace’ villa. In July 1972, the Pieniny Museum reopened. Ten years later it assumed the name of Józef Szalay and was incorporated into the District Museum in Nowy Sącz. Muzeum Pienińskie is located at the western end of Józef Dietl Square, and occupies the first floor of the 19th-century ‘Palace’ villa, which served as a hotel until 1939. The ethnographic section presents regional architecture and interiors of old highlanders’ dwellings, as well as their traditional costumes. Among the folk art collection, note the painted emblems, which in the old days were placed on the houses instead of numbers. In the historical section, the annals of Szczawnica and profiles of its key inhabitants were presented, including Jan Wiktor, a writer, journalist, and painter, who relentlessly campaigned for the establishment of the Museum.
