Summary
[edit]DescriptionMadison County Courthouse, Marshall, NC (50527862658).jpg | Built in 1908 and designed by Asheville-based architect Richard Sharp Smith of the firm Smith & Carrier, the Madison County Courthouse is a Classical Revival-style building that has a nearly identical twin in nearby Sylva, North Carolina built in 1913 to the same plan. The building terminates the view coming over the French Broad River on a bridge carrying Baileys Branch Road, forming a monumental axis that, while less grand than it’s twin, is still very impressive. The building has seen very little change to its appearance in its history, maintaining it’s original natural brick exterior. The clocks on the dome, a later addition, mimic similar features on other Smith-designed courthouses around the region. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. |
