Italiano: La ricchezza della composizione ha da sempre fatto sì che catalogatori e storici dell’arte fornissero varie interpretazioni del soggetto. Dora e Erwin Panofsky propongono di vedere la cieca Pandora che, aprendo l’elaborata cassa in basso a sinistra, libera il Bene e il Male. Ripetuti sono i rimandi all’eterna lotta fra notte e giorno, buio e luce, ignoranza e intelligenza. Lucifero scende al buio verso gli inferi e Apollo sale verso il sole annunciando una nuova era. Il soggetto è molto vicino alle ricerche della Scuola di Fontainebleau, tuttavia stilisticamente il foglio è certamente di un maestro italiano probabilmente veneziano (l’incisone è stata nel tempo attribuita ad Angelo Falconetto e Battista Angolo del Moro). E’ noto un secondo stato con la data 1643 e il monogramma DIB o CIB che identificherebbe l’editore. In aggiunta a quanto riportato in tutte le bibliografie nel margine inferiore sotto il monogramma la data 1576 è stat chiaramente corretta in 1557, si tratta dunque di un nuovo stato intermedio il I e il II noti. Il disegno preparatorio è in collezione americana con attribuzione dubitativa a Pirro Ligorio (1513 – 1583), architetto e antiquario napoletano ma attivo a Roma per la famiglia Este di Ferrara.
