Summary[edit]

Description
English: As seen in March 2020: the building at 1420 Main Street, opposite the corner of Glenwood Avenue in Buffalo, New York, has had a multifaceted history. Erected in 1925, it first served as home to the Churchill Evangelistic Tabernacle, where the Rev. Clinton H. Churchill, a charismatic local Methodist minister, preached to audiences that had grown too big for their former home on Grant Street. Churchill was among the first religious leaders locally to grasp the potential of radio as a means of evangelism; a year after this building's completion, he applied to the FCC for, and was granted, a license to operate the radio station that would become WKBW-AM (now WWKB). In 1958, Churchill inaugurated WKBW-TV, which used the former church building as its studios and the smaller building next door, seen at right here), as its transmitter site. Churchill sold the stations in 1961 to commercial interests, and WKBW-TV moved to its current studios downtown in 1978. The building seen here is now an event space.
