Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built as the South Flanker Building in 1755, this building originally served as guest accommodations for visitors to Middleton Place, sitting to the south of the plantation house, which was built in 1741 in the Jacobean style. During the Civil War, Middleton Plantation’s buildings were destroyed by the Union Army, leaving only the brick exterior walls of the plantation house and the north flanker building and south flanker building standing. Following the Civil War, the central wing of the plantation house was not rebuilt, as the family’s financial situation was dire due to the destruction of the local economy and the physical landscape of their plantation during the war. As a result, the south flanker building, which had received the least damage during the destruction, was rebuilt and enlarged circa 1868 to serve as the main house. The walls of the original plantation house and north flanker building remained standing until the 1886 Charleston Earthquake caused their collapse. Today, the house is a museum that displays artifacts and aspects of the history of the property.
