This is the oil house that was used to store fuel used to light the lights. These lights are the only range lights in New England. The twin 6.7 meter (22 ft) tall towers were constructed in 1898 and are 215 meters (235 yds) apart. The front light is 5.5 meters (18 ft) above mean high water while the rear light is set at 10.1 meters (33 ft). Mariners navigating upriver line up on the two range lights as they psss Ram Island to avoid submerged ledges. Aligned with the lights they follow the channel until Doubling Point Light is visible and then swing to the west headed for Bath. |
