Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Primates; Family: Cercopithecidae; Genus: Theropithecus; Genus species: Theropithecus gelada. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 50-74 cm; Weight: 14-21 kg; Identification: The coat of the gelada baboon is brown and becomes paler at the ends. This baboon has a mane, a long shoulder cape, a patch of naked red skin at the base of neck and chest, and a naked red rump; Habitat: Grasslands, scrublands, woodlands; Diet: Omnivore: grass, roots, bulbs, seeds, fruit, insects; Reproduction: There is no set mating season for this species, although it is often synchronized within a group. Gestation lasts 5-6 months with just one young being born to each female; Social Structure: Groups consist of one male with several females. Several groups form larger bands and bands will sometimes gather into herds when grazing. Within these groups, females form strong bonds with an established hierarchy; Behavior: Gelada baboons are diurnal, sleeping on rock outcroppings at night. All male groups graze separately from mixed groups; Status: Vulnerable; Interesting Facts: These are the only primates that graze.
