[edit]DescriptionMarele Hercule al Franţei, Bobârnacul, 5 nov 1878.jpg |
English: Marele Hercule al Franţei ("The Great Hercules of France"), Francophile cartoon in the Romanian magazine Bobârnacul, paying homage to republican statesman Léon Gambetta. Gambetta is a circus strongman, showing off to the ministers of Europe's conservative monarchies: Gyula Andrássy of Austria-Hungary; Alexander Mikhailovich Gorchakov of the Russian Empire; Otto von Bismarck of the German Empire; all of them portrayed as clowns. Gambetta wears a headband with the French republican motto (Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité), and balances a kettlebell marked POLITICA REPUBLICEI FRANCESA ("Policy of the [Third] French Republic"). In the original caption, he asks the clowns: Ce d̦iceţĭ amicilor, cum vĕ pare jocul acesta? ("What say you, my buddies, how does this game appeal to you?"). They answer: Jocul acesta îl ştim şi noĭ, tu însĕ ne facĭ concurenţă mare în faţa publiculuĭ, căcĭ aĭ maĭ multă dibăcie decât noĭ ("We also know of this game, but you are a great competition for the public's attention, as you show more skill than us all"). |
