Notes: Photograph shows Margaret Jones Burleigh (1817-1891), abolitionist and teacher from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She taught Emily Howland at Mary Grew's School for Young Women in Philadelphia and was a friend and mentor to Howland. She was married to abolitionist Cyrus Burleigh (1820-1855) and both served on the executive committee of the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society. Title devised by Library staff. Date based on years Henry C. Phillips (1843-1911) and Samuel Broadbent (1810-1881) formed a partnership working under the name of Broadbent & Phillips at 1206 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia. "M. J. Burleigh" written across bottom of photograph. DLC "No. 20949"--below photographer's backmark on back of card. DLC Photograph is housed in an album. Album page has decorative gold borders framing the print. DLC "Broadbent & Phillips"-written on bottom of album page. DLC Please use the digital image in the online catalog to preserve the original photograph. Collection of the Library of Congress and the National Museum of African American History & Culture. Purchased by the Library of Congress and the National Museum of African American History and Culture; Swann Galleries; 2017. Formerly owned by Emily Howland.
