Summary

Description

English: The Mayor and the municipal body of the city of Turin sending congratulations to Prince Napoleon on the occasion of his marriage to Princess Clotilde. The following is an extract from a letter sent by Edouard Riou.- There were some receptions which, although they did not have the solemnity of an event or the splendor of a celebration, nevertheless had an importance which seemed to me to require a drawing; of this number is that of the municipal council of Turin, which had claimed the honor of presenting its congratulations to Prince Napoleon and which His Imperial Highness received in the apartments which he occupies on the ground floor of the palace, with the dignity of his rank and the cordial courtesy of a true gentleman. At the head of the council, made up of the most illustrious and popular Turin names, was the mayor of the noble city, the worthy Mr. Notta.

The municipal body first went to the young princess to offer her, in the name of the city, a silver vase of such perfect workmanship that one could say, like Ovid of the temple of the sun : Materiam superabat opus.(Related illustration) I have not yet been able to obtain a copy, but if it is possible to have it, you will have it. This is not, moreover, the only sympathetic tribute that Princess Clotilde has received from public bodies. The national guard did not want to stay behind its aldermen and presented His Royal Highness with a bouquet, but a bouquet like Genoa alone, Genoa, this parterre of the Sardinian States, which are, for their part, the garden of Italy, can provide in the middle of winter, a marvelous bouquet: the flowers were decorated with a ribbon of eight Italian ells.
