Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Marshall Voisinet House, 272 Englewood Avenue, Buffalo, New York, February 2021. Almost certainly the oldest extant building in what's now the University Heights section of Buffalo as well as one of the few remnants of Eleyville - once a country hamlet straddling what's now the border between Buffalo and Tonawanda, populated principally by farmers of German and French descent - the Voisinet House dates to c. 1865 and is a fairly typical example of mid-19th century vernacular rural architecture, with a so-called "gabled ell" design and subtle Italianate detailing. (The clapboard-sided enclosed front porch is, of course, a much later addition.) This was originally the home of Marshall Voisinet (1823-1884), a native of Belfort, Franche-Comté, France who immigrated to the U.S. with his family (his father was Louis Voisinet, whose own house still stands just over the city line in the Town of Tonawanda) and worked as a small-plot farmer and later hay merchant.
