Summary
[edit]DescriptionMary MacKillop Australias first saint.jpg |
Today is a special day for Australia - the canonisation of our first saint, Mary MacKillop. Mary MacKillop (1842-1909) founded an order of sisters to provide an education for children of poor families and children in remote areas in the Australia of her time. This extended to caring for orphans, the homeless, former prisoners and prostitutes. Mary faced opposition from both inside and outside the Church, but remained committed to what she believed was God's will, without a hint of malice towards those who attacked her. I am astonished and delighted at the way even secular Australia is celebrating this event. Mary's qualities of courage, compassion, determination and defiance of authority for what she believed, have captured the imagination of the nation. May the spirit of this "Aussie battler" bring us down to earth, unite us and guide us to live common-sense lives of compassion and justice. Even the racing industry has adopted Mary - there was a "Mary MacKillop Handicap" this afternoon. |
