Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Mask-costume, egungun . 20th century. Africa, Nigeria, Oyo State. Yoruba population. Textile, wood, metal, plastic. Donation Antoine de Galbert. Museum of Confluences, Lyon. The mask egungun conceals any human form. It represents the spirit of an ancestor who manifests himself to the living. It may appear a few days after the death of a family member or during ceremonies honoring the memory of the deceased. The mask dances while turning on itself, twirling its strips of cloth, to the sound of drums. The wind it raises is seen as beneficial. On the other hand, his direct contact can be fatal. : Notice of the museum.
Français : Masque-costume, egungun. 20e siècle. Afrique, Nigeria, État d'Oyo. Population yoruba.
